Description

The Reddit Data API gives access to posts, comments, subreddits and user content, and lets approved apps post and vote. Requests use OAuth.

In a marketing workflow it is used for community listening, topic and sentiment research and finding questions customers ask. Reddit’s terms limit what you may do with the data.

It suits personal, research and small non-commercial projects. Commercial products and agents that resell or process Reddit data at scale need to check terms and likely agree terms with Reddit first.

Key endpoints

  • GET /r/{subreddit}/hot: hot posts in a subreddit
  • GET /r/{subreddit}/new: newest posts
  • GET /comments/{article}: a post with its comments
  • GET /search: search posts
  • GET /user/{username}/about: public user info

Example request

curl -H "Authorization: bearer YOUR_ACCESS_TOKEN" -H "User-Agent: myapp/0.1 by YOUR_USERNAME" "https://oauth.reddit.com/r/marketing/hot?limit=5"

Editor’s note What our review found

Editorial research, reviewed 23 Oct 2026. We read Reddit's Developer Platform help article and Data API Wiki. We did not run live calls. This listing is not an endorsement.

Cost: Reddit says it offers both free and paid access. Non-commercial use is free after you sign up. Commercial use (any use by a business, or in a monetized product) needs Reddit's permission and a contract, and bulk exporting is limited by default. Reddit gives no price list. Read the Developer Terms and Data API Terms before building.

Credentials and data: you register an app and use OAuth. Keep the client secret and tokens in environment variables or a secret manager, never in code or plain-text files. Posts and comments contain usernames and personal information, so check privacy law and Reddit's terms before storing or processing them.

Good to know: the Wiki sets 100 queries per minute per OAuth client id, averaged over 10 minutes. You must send a unique, descriptive User-Agent and delete content that was deleted on Reddit (Reddit recommends clearing stored data within 48 hours). Reddit says you may not train AI models on its content without consent, may not display Reddit content next to ads, and that academic research must go through its Reddit For Researchers program, not the API.
